EnvironmentAl integrated, multilevel knoWledge and approaches to counteract critical AIR pollution events, improving vulnerable citizens quality of life in Central Europe Functional Urban Areas
What is AWAIR
AWAIR aims to define new indicators for air quality and to evaluate the effectiveness of measures applied during Severe Air Pollution Events (SAPEs), to achieve greater protection of the health of citizens, with a special focus on vulnerable and susceptible people. Communicating correctly to stakeholders and citizens is among the main objectives.
AWAIR involves 8 partners and 5 associated partners from academia, research and municipalities across 5 countries. Four FUAs are represented.
AWAIR will produce technical information on air quality measurements, parameters and indicators, and predictive tools, to estimate the effectiveness of the actions in case of SAPEs. There will be two pilot actions in Parma and Katowice. AWAIR will produce a transnational strategy for coordination of urban plans at FUA level decision support tools and guidelines for decision makers and public administrators. AWAIR will produce an app for mobiles and tablets, to implement communication with stakeholders and citizens.
Communication in the project
AWAIR aims at improving communication to citizens and stakeholders during SAPEs, and will experiment new strategies and tools. AWAIR will also communicate its results outside the FUAs, to larger audiences involving other research projects and administrators in other countries. All partners will be involved in communicating at local, national, European and international level.
Results of communication
The final result of the communication from AWAIR will be to increase the knowledge about air quality, to increase the awareness about the impacts of air quality on health, to prompt changes in attitudes and behaviour in citizens and stakeholders. The technical knowledge developed by AWAIR will be disseminated to scientists and users. The decision making tools will reach administrators and regulators. The main results will be widely spread to the general public through digital media, press, TV and meetings. Young people and children will be reached through schools and educators. This document on the Project Communication Strategy describes in detail all outputs.
Reference points of the AWAIR strategy
AWAIR will work in the EU context, having as reference the situation of EU countries, the EU legislation framework and the common environment we all share. However, the tools developed will be amenable to translation and adaptation to other local communities.

AWAIR project has met residents of Katowice during the annual, open event 5th Energy Days of the Katowice city. This year’s motto – Mission Clear Air! At the GIG booth we talk about our project for clean air, social awareness and involving citizens.
The "State of the Air 2018" found ozone pollution worsened significantly in 2014-2016 compared to the previous report, while improvements continued in year-round particle pollution and fewer episodes of high particle days. This year's report provides continued evidence that the United States must continue to fight climate change and support and enforce the [...]
What would happen if all petrol and diesel-powered vehicles were removed from a smaller European city? Up to 4% of all premature deaths could be prevented, according to a new study from Lund University in Sweden. The researchers used Malmö, Sweden, as a case study to calculate the health costs of inner city traffic.
