THE PROJECT

Paper and cardboard represented 41% of packaging waste generated by weight in the EU-28 in 2013 (about 32.2 million tonnes). The appearance of microplastics in recycled paper secondary materials and compost is becoming a major concern. There is a high potential for mobilizing synergies between business and research in the area of combined paper-bioplastics packaging design, production and recycling in Central Europe. Linkages are not sufficiently established due to lack of awareness among paper packaging producers on new bioplastics materials, a separated focus on plastics and paper in clusters and branch organizations, the lack of a common innovation strategy within a clear European and national legal and economic context and the lack of dedicated tools to support SME’s in introducing new paper-plastics packaging solutions. The main project objective is to provide to stronger linkages between R&D institutions and companies in the area of paper-plastics packaging solutions with the aim to introduce verified biodegradable materials in paper and cardboard packaging. The project foresees an innovative cross-sectoral approach and the involvement of clusters, branch organizations and stakeholders, that will allow to focus on regional economic specialisations and to speed up technology transfer. The Project Partners will establish a Transnational Biocomposite Packaging Centre as a virtual RDI platform that brings together cross-sectoral capacities in paper and bioplastics, linked with regional innovation systems and the European Enterprise Network, supported by an integrated cross-sectoral business support service including a set of dedicated tools tested under pilot actions and disseminated among cluster coordinators and EEN consultants. A Central European Strategy on biocomposite packaging innovation systems shall set the framework, a handbook: "Sustainable Paper-Plastic Design" and an audit tool will help companies to quickly verify opportunities and chose for change.

INTERNAL MEETING

Internal meeting on pilot actions

For the third time DBH and Omnipack hosted the Biocompack meeting in Hungary. The internal meeting on pilot actions took place in Budapest on the 18th and 19th February at DBH headquarter. Partners finalized the final version of the strategy and the economic feasibility and wp leader updated the others about the first pilot action and the next steps to take. DBH and Omnipack organized, at the end of the meeting, a visit to Ugrinpack, an enterprise leader in Hungary in the production of biodegradable and compostable packaging.

4th Steering Committee

The mid term meeting was held on 11 and 12 April to assess the situation of the project, the progress, critical issues and future developments of Biocompack. This meeting was also attended by Mrs. Angelika van Es, project program officer from the EC joint secretariat, Professor Marek Kowalczuk from the Polish Academy of Sciences, and Mr. Klonowski from the Polish ministry of the environment.The Transnational Biocomposite Packaging Center (TBPC), the real final goal of the project, which will ideally see its birth at the end of the project but the goal is to start it even earlier.

The workshop was organized by our hungarian partner DBH with the cluster Omnipack. Project partners moved step further to complete the business strategy and the business support tool. Those elements are at the base of the establishment of the Transnational Biocomposite Packaging Centre, the platform that will connoct companies, public institutions and research companies all over Europe.

The 3^rd Steering Committee took place in Milan the 16^th and 17^th October in Innovhub venue. During the meeting, all the partners presented their achievement and their plans for the next future. After the first session, partners went deeper in the discussion about the next steps to do in each work package. Biocompack is collecting comments from stakeholders to finalize the strategy document and then start with the Pilot Action 1 run by DBH.

The 2nd Steering Committee was organized by RERA SD, the regional development agency, and it took place in Split, the wonderful town situated along the Dalmatian coast. Two days of intensive work: each partner showed the progresses reached and the steps done to make BIOCOMPACK a successful project.

KICK OFF MEETING

Kick off meeting Ljubljana

The project has already started. The partners met in the lovely capital of Slovenia, who received the European Green Capital Award from the European Commission in 2016, to present themselves, sharing ideas and doubts. The group is quite heterogeneous, public research institutes, universities, SMEs, NGO, with one common goal: find out a green alternative to paper-plastics packaging, in order to introduce verified biodegradable materials in millions of people’s daily lives.
